Romanesque church, Veľká Tŕňa

Churches · Veľká Tŕňa · Románsky emporový kostolík

A 13th-century hilltop church with a lord's gallery and Romanesque murals, now used by the Reformed Church.

The church, formerly dedicated to St Michael, was built around the second quarter of the 13th century with an empora, a raised gallery for the local lord, and the Tokaj Wine Route association describes it as one of the most notable Romanesque churches in Slovakia. Its tympanum keeps Romanesque murals dated to about 1254, including a Madonna and Child in the Byzantine eleusa style. It was extended in the 16th and 17th centuries, repaired in 1834 and restored in the early 20th century. Today it is the church of the Reformed Christian Church; no opening hours are published, so ask locally if you want to see the interior.
