About Tokaj Slovakia
Short boilerplate (40 words)
Tokaj Slovakia (tokajslovakia.com) is the independent guide to Slovak Tokaj, the seven-village wine region in south-eastern Slovakia. It helps visitors find wineries, tuff cellars, events and places to stay, with listings checked and dated. It is not an official site.
Long boilerplate (120 words)
Tokaj Slovakia (tokajslovakia.com) is the independent guide to Slovak Tokaj: the Slovak side of the historic Tokaj wine region, which continues across the Hungarian border. Slovak law defines it as a closed wine region made up of the cadastral areas of seven villages, with a delimited area commonly given as 907 hectares. The guide covers wineries and tuff cellars, traditional wine styles such as výber and samorodné, events, places to stay and ways to get there, in English, Slovak and Polish. Every listing shows when it was last verified, and basic listings are free for all businesses. Paid Partner listings are always labelled and never change list order or editorial text. The guide is not an official site and is not affiliated with any tourism board or wine association.
Story ideas
The last 3- and 4-putňový výber
Výber is the Slovak sweet wine made by soaking botrytised berries (cibéby) in must or wine, graded by the number of putne, the traditional tubs of berries. Slovakia kept the 3- and 4-putňový levels, which Hungary no longer uses for its aszú. Within Tokaj, these two levels are now made only on the Slovak side. Read more on wine styles.
Seven villages, one closed wine region
The Slovak part of Tokaj is a closed wine region that Slovak law defines by the cadastral areas of seven villages. Its delimited area is commonly given as 907 hectares; the vineyard register showed 891 hectares of vineyards in 2022. On 31 July 2025, 657 hectares of Tokaj grape varieties were registered in Slovakia and 42 wine producers in the region, many of them small family cellars that open by arrangement.
Cellars cut into volcanic tuff
The wine ages in cellars dug into tuff, a soft volcanic rock. In Veľká Tŕňa, 33 stone portals open into the farmhouse cellars (gazdovské pivnice) of the village's historic cellar area. In Malá Tŕňa, the Tokaj & CO cellar runs for about 2.5 km and holds about 1,500 barrels; it is a national cultural monument. See tuff cellars.
One landscape, two countries
The Tokaj wine region is one historic landscape split by the border between Hungary and Slovakia. The Hungarian part has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002; the Slovak part has been on Slovakia's Tentative List since the same year. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has twice recommended that the two countries work towards a cross-border extension. Please note that the Slovak part is not a World Heritage Site.
A name settled in court
Hungary challenged the entry of Slovak Tokaj wine in the EU's E-Bacchus database. The EU General Court (case T-194/10, 8 November 2012) and the Court of Justice (case C-31/13 P, 13 February 2014) both ruled against the challenge. See Slovak and Hungarian Tokaj.
A new protected name in 2025
Since 2006, Slovak Tokaj wine has been protected in the EU as Vinohradnícka oblasť Tokaj. In 2025, a second designation of origin followed: Tokajské víno zo slovenskej oblasti, registered by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1291 of 2 July 2025. Hungary opposed it; the Commission registered the name, finding no risk of confusion with Hungarian Tokaj and Tokaji.
